Functional Characterization of the Bladder Cancer Marker, BLCA-4

BLCA-4, a bladder cancer-specific proteins, is able to separate in clinical trials individuals with bladder cancer from those without the disease with high sensitivity and specificity. The BLCA-4 urine levels are significantly higher in patients with bladder cancer than in normal volunteers enrolled in the study. BLCA-4 occurs early in the development of the disease and appears to be a transcription factor that may play a role in the regulation of the gene expression in bladder cancer.
